WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE FASHION ERA?

No, not “error” but “era!”  I’m an “Old School” girl, myself!  I absolutely love the tailored suits of the 40s and 50s; the Mod Style of the 60s; the psychedelic “Everything Goes” look of the 70s; the lace fabrics and padded shoulders of the 80s; and the boyfriend jeans and jackets of the 90s!  Ok, stop laughing! I like shoulder pads!  However, if you ask me to choose; although I’d be torn, I would have to choose the 70s!

The 70s was full of bell bottom pants, butterfly collared funky printed shirts, comfortable platform shoes that men and women wore, and patchwork leathers and furs that you could throw on all together and no one would dare look at you crazy!  The fabric to have and wear was Polyester!  It was cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and the bonus was you could throw it in the washing machine!  You couldn’t go wrong in the 70s!  Every color and pattern went together!  It was a very colorful era!

So what’s your favorite era?

1960s

1970s

1980s

While bows at the neck (Neck Tie Blouses) had been worn since at least the nineteenth century, the term "pussy bow" or "pussy cat bow" took hold in the 20th century. The Pussy Bow Blouse was all the rage on the runway during New York Fashion Week!  Vintage & Charmed has plenty, so you’d better get here soon before they’re all gone!!!

Christian Dior introduced the classic modern pencil skirt in his 1954 Autumn Winter collection. The pencil skirt quickly became very popular, particularly for office wear.  The 1950s took this trend by storm when they paired the pencil skirt with a classic pump or high heels with sheer stockings or back-seamed hosiery!  Ooh-la-la!!!  Nothing’s sexier than a fitted pencil skirt in high heel stilettos!  This classic outfit can be worn to work, dinner, a night out on the town, a wedding, to church or just about anywhere!

1990s

THE BONUS

Fashion repeats itself!  There are very little new styles, but just a remix of past styles given a new name!

Hit me up on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and let me know your favorite era!  I bet we have the inventory at Vintage & Charmed to accommodate your favorite!  So come to The Anacostia Arts Center at 1231 Good Hope Road, SE, Gallery D, and let Vintage & Charmed Style your life!!!   Mic drop…enough said!!!

TAKING YOUR WARDROBE FROM SUMMER TO FALL

TAKING YOUR WARDROBE FROM SUMMER TO FALL

Tuesday, August 25, 2015, on Fox 5’s Good Day DC, the beautiful owner of Hush Boutique, Tamara Lee, in Clinton, Maryland gave us some great advice on “purging” our wardrobes for the upcoming Fall Season!  She mentioned being honest with ourselves and keeping what fits, swapping what doesn’t, throwing out what we’ve worn out, and donating what’s gone out of style!  Now this advice is definitely perfect for those whom follow trend!  However, for all of my Charmies and Boo Kittens whom love VINTAGE and have more of an eclectic style and way of doing things, NOTHING GOES OUT OF STYLE FOR US!!!  So don’t you dare worry, Ms. FeFe’s got you!!!
Here’s three helpful hints for those of us whom don’t plan on purging those items that the “TRENDIES” think are “out of style”:
  1. You can modernize any piece of clothing
    • Throw a jacket, denim shirt, kimono or shrug over your favorite floral or colorful maxi sundress and top it off with chunky jewelry and a pair of peep toe booties.
    • Add a pair of solid colored leggings underneath that short sundress with a denim jacket or shirt, Kimono or Cardigan and a pashmina, cotton or silk scarf with your favorite sunglasses.  If you really want to turn some heads and keep them talking, throw on a pair of ruffled baby doll socks with a pair of black pumps.

  1. You can weatherize any piece of clothing;
    • Put on your favorite light weight trench coat or trench vest on top of either of the outfits mentioned above;
    • Take your favorite pair of Summer Pajama Pants and add a long sleeve t-shirt with a cropped jacket.  Make sure the prints are fun and have at least one like color in common, and then throw on a pair of leopard pumps!  Yes, I said Leopard Pumps!!!  “Leopard Pumps goes with everything!”

  1. What’s new is old and What’s old is new;
    • Fashion repeats itself;  from the leopard print coat, gloves and pumps that your granny and mom wore, to the black sheath dress, double breast swing coat, cow neck cropped tunic and black pencil legged pants worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

  1. Your style is an extension of your personality;
    • Your style is a part of your character and your personality! You develop your style at a very young age.  You gravitate to what you like and the look(s) you most identify with.
  2. And NEVER EVER follow a trend, be a trendsetter!!!
    • Make your own trends!  Rules are meant to be broken, so don’t let some designer or stylist give you a list of Fashion Rules that they say shouldn’t be broken!
    • Wear what makes you feel FABULOUS!!!

WHY WEAR VINTAGE

http://ftape.com/media/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Naomi-Campbell_Vanity-Fair-Spain_06.jpg
WHY WEAR VINTAGE
Grand Ma’s Leopard Print Coat, Momma’s Powder Blue Sleeveless Sheath Dress, and Your Great Auntie’s Psychedelic Bell Bottom Jumpsuit…you know you’ve checked these items out and maybe even tried them on wondering if you could get away with wearing them today!  Well, NEWS FLASH, Styles and Fashion repeat themselves!  What’s old is new and what’s new is old!  That same Leopard Print Cape that Grandma use to wear is now on one of the most sought after Super Models in a Photo Spread in Vogue Magazine, and we all look at it as if it’s only first been seen!  I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually got it from Grandma’s closet!
Vintage is alive and well and being worn by some of the most popular celebrities and models of today!  Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige, Drew Barrymore and Naomi Campbell all love vintage!  Why, you ask…because they just don’t make clothes like they used to, and they definitely don’t use the same fabrics.  Today’s designers are looking for the least expensive fabrics that they can use to mass produce ready-to-wear.  Every major department store carries them, and we all go run and buy the exact same things.  When we see ourselves on every corner and at every event, we have the nerve and the audacity to get mad!  Ok Charmies and Boo Kittens, don’t get MAD get VINTAGE!!!
When I think of Vintage, I think of fabulously solid fabrics tapered to a perfect fit, beautiful bold colored patterns and one-of-a-kind finds!  Vintage is the epitome of the Turner Classic Movie Channel.  I swear I watch just for the Fashion!  When you buy vintage, you are guaranteed to get the only one that exist!  You will not have to worry about seeing yourself everywhere you turn!  Vintage isn’t just a form of Fashion, it’s a lifestyle.  When you buy vintage, you are actually being ecofriendly!  I bet you didn’t know that buying previously owned clothing, is a form of recycling.  So you’re actually contributing to the conservation of the environment when you buy vintage!

So now that I’ve given you the “tea” on Vintage, come to Vintage & Charmed and let us Style Your Life!!!

Shopping is therapeutic...

Feeling sad? Then hit the shops... it really works! Buying something makes people three times happier!!!
Researchers found shopping makes a person feel more in control of life
Reflecting on recent purchases combats sadness and sparks motivation

Spree: Scientists found new purchases combat sadness and spark motivation
It is the news that will strike fear into the hearts of those who pay off the family credit cards every month.
New research has found that retail therapy - far from being empty and superficial - can be an ‘effective way to minimize sadness.’

It can even help a person feel more in control of their environment, researchers claim.
Generations of consumers have been urged to satisfy their desire to keep abreast of the latest fashion by simply browsing in store and window shopping.
But researchers from the University of Michigan claim ‘retail therapy’ should no longer be dismissed as it could help people overcome melancholy.
The study carried out three experiments to investigate whether shopping restored a sense of control in people to combat feelings of sadness.
The research found that buying something was up to 40 times more effective at giving people a sense of control and they were three times happier than those who only browsed.
Previous studies have shown that shoppers enjoy positive feelings when reflecting on their most recent purchase, when that shopping had been motivated by a desire to repair mood.
 Others said they were less likely to experience sadness while shopping than immediately before setting out on a buying spree.

The researchers at the University of Michigan question whether shopping is merely a distraction from distress

Reflecting on purchases helps people feel better about themselves!
However, researchers said until now it had remained unclear whether shopping conveys benefits beyond those produced merely by distraction, or the passage of time.
They said: ‘Our work suggests that making shopping choices can help to restore a sense of personal control over one’s environment and reduce sadness.
'Retail therapy - shopping that is motivated by distress - is often said to be ineffective, wasteful and a dark side of consumer behavior, but we propose that retail therapy has been viewed too negatively, and that shopping may be an effective way to minimize sadness.'

We’ll be waiting for you here at Vintage & Charmed Classic Clothing to come and get your Retail Therapy on!!!  We are here to make you feel happier and to make you look ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!

“So come and let Vintage & Charmed Style Your Life so you can feel better!!!”
